John Atkinson of Gwynn’s Island, will be releasing his new book through Fisher King Press on Dec. 1, titled “Timekeeper.” The literary fiction novel is based on Atkinson’s own experiences as a 14-year-old boy running away from home. In this coming-of-age tale, Atkinson describes his hardships, victories, and all the inspirational people who guided him through his journey. He uses his Native American heritage to tell his story of illiteracy and his triumph over it.
Atkinson began writing about twelve years ago, starting with short stories and progressing to novellas and novels. It was then that he discovered his love for writing and now describes it as his passion. He now says he never goes to bed without a book, which is a far cry from his earlier years of being unable to read in school. After teaching himself to read around 15, Atkinson found just how much books can give a person. With the help of mentors described in his book, Atkinson discovered his love of reading and writing.
Over the past twelve years, his articles and short stories have appeared in local newspapers and magazines including the Gazette-Journal and Chesapeake Magazine. He was also nominated for a Library of Virginia Award in 2001 and won first place in fiction category at the Chesapeake Bay Writer’s Conference.
Atkinson is an active member of the Chesapeake Bay Writer’s Club, James River Writers, Virginia Writers Club and two bi-monthly critique groups. He is excited about the upcoming publication and describes his novel as an “American story of redemption” and says that readers of all ages can enjoy it.
A book signing is planned for Dec. 15 at Barnes & Noble in Williamsburg from 7-9. And for excited readers there is already talk about a follow-up novel. Be sure to grab your copy of “Timekeeper,” available nationwide.
